Thousands lined the streets of the city to say a final goodbye to its favorite son.

As 500 police officers lined the route, Ali was driven past his childhood home, the Ali Center, the Center for African American Heritage and then down Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

Ali will be laid to rest at the Cave Hill Cemetery under a headstone that reads simply "Ali.”

As the hearse carrying The Champ’s body drove past fans, spectators shouted “Ali! Ali!” as if he was back in the ring for a title bout. It was a sound that the boxer was used to in life. In death, he is carried off by the same fanfare.

His memorial service Friday will be attended by President Bill Clinton, Bryant Gumble, former boxer Lennox Lewis, the daughter of civil rights activist Malcolm X, Attallah Shabazz and actor/comedian Billy Crystal inside the KFC Yum! Center arena.
