During Katy Perry's performance of her new song “Swish Swish,” 15-year-old Russell Horning became a social media sensation as his dancing skills were given center stage.

“It was really nerve-wracking because half of the country was watching me,” he told Inside Edition. “You can’t mess up on live TV.”

Horning, who donned a backpack on the show, was contacted by Perry earlier in the week after his Instagram page was recommended to her.

“It felt really good to be up on that stage since millions of kids want to be up there but Katy Perry picked me,” he said.

Social media has dubbed him “backpack kid.”

“I really expected all of this to happen,” he admitted. “It is a really big show and what I did was really original.”

Perry even attempted the dance moves backstage at SNL but failed.

He explained that he wore the backpack on stage because he thought it looked good. He said he had a water bottle, a few fidget spinners and a phone charger in his backpack to help weigh it down.
