'Miracle Child' With Umbilical Cord Still Attached Survives for Hours in Gym Bag Left Outside Clinic

Staffers at a clinic in Georgia made a startling discovery when they found an infant in a closed gym bag that had been left outside the facility earlier that day, police said.

Officers with Chamblee Police responded to the Family Medical Clinic Thursday, where cleaning staff found a baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached in a blue canvas gym bag, authorities said.

Surveillance footage showed the child was left in front of the clinic during the early morning hours Wednesday and the bag was eventually brought inside by workers who thought the bag belonged to a patient, police said.

The bag went unopened and the infant remained inside without any nourishment or attention for the entire day, officials said.

Finally, employees discovered the baby just after midnight.

“Based on the initial timeline of the incident, the medical staff considers the infant boy a miracle child,” Chamblee Police said in a statement.

Officers who responded to the scene called for EMS, who rushed the newborn to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite for treatment.

The baby, who weighed 4.86 pounds when he was found, did not appear to be full term, authorities said.

The Division of Family and Children Services was contacted and responded to the hospital, where they took custody of the infant.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
