Amanda Knox is talking about the moment she was told she will be retried for murder, she says, “It was very painful.”
25-year-old Knox is speaking out for the first time to ABC’s Diane Sawyer about her four year ordeal in an Italian prison.
Knox said, “I felt like after crawling through a field of barbed wire and finally reaching what I thought was the end only to find it was the horizon and I had another field of barbed wire that I had ahead of me to crawl through.”
Knox and her then boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were charged with murdering her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007. Italian prosecutors called her a "devil with the face of an angel."
Knox said, “Its one thing to be called certain things in the media. It's another to be sitting in a courtroom fighting for your life while people are calling you a devil.”
Her book, Waiting to be Heard is being published. She confesses to a life of drugs and casual sex while she was studying in Italy.
She writes "marijuana was as common as pasta" in her apartment and she describes three one-night stands in six weeks.
She says she feared spending the rest of her life behind bars.
Sawyer asked, “You felt like you were being sealed into a tomb?”
Knox said, “Yes. And the tomb was my life. It wasn't the prison. It was my life.”
Sawyer asked, “Did you think about committing suicide?”
Knox replied, “There are plenty of ways you can kill yourself and people did. I imagined doing them all.”
Knox says the Italian justice system never considered her innocent until proved guilty.
She said, “For all intents and purposes I was a murderer whether I was or not and I had to live with the idea that, that would be my life.”
