More details are being revealed about how those kids got to safety after all three mothers were killed.
After nine American women and children were gunned down in northern Mexico in an alleged cartel ambush, family members are reuniting with with the young children who survived the harrowing attack.
More details are being revealed about how those kids got to safety after all three mothers were killed. A 13-year-old boy named Devin hid his siblings under tree branches and then walked for hours to find help. But when he didn't return, 9-year-old McKenzie went out in search of him.
McKenzie was grazed in the arm by a bullet in the ambush. Sill, she managed a small smile in the hospital as they were reunited with other family members.
Bullets also hit 8-year-old Cody and 14-year-old Kylie, who looked to be a state of shock as she sat on a bed with a bandaged foot.
And the youngest survivor, little 9-month-old Brixton, was shot in the chest and jaw. His dad, David, put his arms around the boy and comforted him in the hospital.
And 8-month-old Faith was found alive 11 hours after the ambush. She was still in her car seat after her mother was killed. She was reunited with her father as well.
On Tuesday night, police announced they had taken a suspect into custody in the massacre. However, officials later said he was not involved.
There were also several vehicles with the suspect, including one that was bullet-proof, authorities said.
Police suspect the cartel may have mistaken the family for a rival gang during a turf war, USA Today reported. However, family members believe they were targeted.
President Trump tweeted a condemnation of the attack on Tuesday, saying "This is the time for Mexico, with the help of the United States, to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth."
All of the dead and wounded had dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship, family members said.
