As ‘Murphy Brown’ Returns, a Look Back at How the Sitcom Challenged the System

The groundbreaking CBS sitcom “Murphy Brown” is coming back this month after 20 years off the air. The revival is said to be tackling the #MeToo movement and Donald Trump’s presidency. The title character, played by Candice Bergen, was no stranger to controversy in the show’s original run from 1988 to 1998. In a 1997 episode, she smoked medicinal marijuana and came under fire from the DEA. In 1992, she had a child out of wedlock, a storyline ridiculed by then-Vice President Dan Quayle.
