Police dashed out a glimmer of hope in the case of a missing Iowa college student after a possible sighting had been reported near Kansas City, Missouri, last week.
It was reported early Wednesday that Mollie Tibbetts, who has been missing since July 18, had potentially been seen eight days later at a Kearney truck stop near Interstate 35 and Highway 92. The potential sighting fueled hope and became one of the top trending topics on social media.
However, police said later Wednesday that the sighting "has been ruled out."
Tibbetts, 20, disappeared after going for a jog near her boyfriend’s home in Brooklyn, Iowa.
Authorities have yet to give an official timeline; but police have been combing through information from Tibbetts’ Fitbit, which she always wore, as well as her cellphone and social media accounts.
“We are getting a lot of information back from that process. We are very hopeful with the electronic data we are getting back,” Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, previously told the Des Moines Register. “We are relying on the FBI heavily because it’s an ever-changing world in technology."
