A New York man was killed over the weekend after his T-shirt got tangled in an escalator and choked him to death.
Bronx resident Carlos Alvarez, 48, fell at the Intervale subway station just before 4 a.m. Sunday, police said, and his shirt got caught in the escalator, choking him. He had been drinking, according to authorities.
Alvarez was found unconscious at the top of the moving staircase, police said. Fellow commuters tried to help Alvarez, according to the New York Post.
"When I got off the train, I saw the guy stuck on the escalator," Giovanni Fernandez told the Post. "A lot of people were surrounding him."
Police had to cut Alvarez's shirt to remove him.
Shams Tarek, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, called the incident "tragic" and "unusual."
"Our thoughts are with this man’s family and friends," Tarek told the Post.
