A Texas man was shot dead by his neighbor, who then turned the gun on himself, police said.

A double date ended in bloodshed after one man shot the other and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

The Texas couples, who were also neighbors, had gone mud racing Saturday night and returned home in the wee hours of Sunday, authorities said.

Austin Smith, 27, was shot to death in a driveway by Colby Rigsby, 32, after he intervened in an argument between Rigsby and his girlfriend, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Rigsby turned the gun on himself when deputies arrived, authorities said.

Deputies were called about 3:15 a.m. after a shot rang out in the couples' neighborhood. Smith's girlfriend told deputies that Rigsby and his girlfriend got into an argument when the group got home. Smith tried to get between the couple, and Rigsby pulled a handgun, she said.

That's when Smith, his girlfriend and Rigsby's girlfriend fled, deputies said. Smith returned later to retrieve his four-wheeler from Rigsby's driveway, according to authorities, and was shot and killed.

Rigsby went inside his house. When deputies arrived to arrest him, they heard a gunshot from inside the home, authorities said. He died from a self-inflicted bullet wound, authorities said.
