David Cassidy Reveals Battle With Dementia: 'I Was in Denial'
He made the announcement after shocking footage surfaced of the former teen heartthrob over the weekend.
Partridge Family star David Cassidy has left his fans in shock after revealing that he is suffering from dementia.
"I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming," he told People magazine.
Cassidy says he decided to go public with his illness because he didn't want people to think he was drunk on stage.
He says he will stop touring immediately to deal with his health.
"I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been without any distractions," he said. "I want to love. I want to enjoy life."
The former teen heartthrob, who shot to fame on The Partridge Family in the 70s, has battled alochol for many years. He has been arrested several times for DUI.
He says dementia runs in the 66-year-old’s family, as both his mother — actress Evelyn Ward — and grandfather suffered from the disease.
In 2012, he discussed the affects dementia had on his mother, telling CNN, "To watch someone who raised you, who was so vibrant, to watch them lose their mind and disappear is arguably the most painful thing I've ever experienced."
Cassidy’s Partridge Family co-star Danny Bonaduce sent a message of support to his friend via Twitter.
David Cassidy once had a bigger fan club than Elvis & the Beatles. If you're a fan, now is a great time to send him your love & best wishes.February 21, 2017
