Teen Girl Rescued by Sheriff's Deputies After Attempting Suicide on Facebook Live
A Georgia teenager was revived after swallowing pills and putting a plastic bag over her head on Facebook Live, authorities said.
A teenage girl was saved by Georgia sheriff’s deputies after she tried to kill herself on Facebook Live, authorities said.
The terrible scene was visible at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as viewers on the social media site saw the unidentified girl swallow pills and wrap a plastic bag around her head, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department.
Several area residents called 911 after seeing the footage, Sheriff David Davis said. Facebook representatives had also called, he said.
Patrol cars and an ambulance responded to the girl’s home after obtaining her address from school officials.
The teen, whose age was not given, still had a pulse and was revived by paramedics, The Telegraph of Macon, Ga., reported.
She is hospitalized and in good condition, Davis said.
"It’s a good thing that the people watching this called it in,” he told reporters, according to the paper. “Those people did the right thing.”
Facebook announced this week that it would hire 3,000 more people to review and respond to questionable videos and posts on its site. The act followed intense criticism that the social media giant had not responded fast enough to several recent killings posted online.
Last week, a Thai man hanged his 11-month-old daughter on the streaming service and the post remained online for nearly 24 hours before it was removed.
In April, a Cleveland man fatally shot an elderly man and posted the video to Facebook, where it remained for about three hours before being removed.
After that incident, Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg said his sprawling global network would increase policing of the site to prevent the posting of objectionable content.
