Family Defends Fitness Instructor Accused of Leaking Top Secret Report on Russia Hacks: 'She's a Patriot'
Reality Winner faces 10 years in prison for leaking a report on Russia's alleged interference with last year's election.
The family of Reality Winner, who is accused of leaking a top secret report on Russia, is breaking their silence, saying the 25-year-old does not deserve to be behind bars.
Reality Leigh Winner faces up to 10 years in federal prison, if convicted, after she was revealed as the person allegedly responsible for disseminating the top secret NSA report to The Intercept website.
"You may not agree with her politics, but she's a patriot," her stepfather, Gary Davis, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“She’s a veteran, six years’ service of the Air Force,” he added. “She received commendations during that time. She’s just a passionate young woman who probably made some mistakes.”
Winner is a fitness instructor who joined the U.S. Air Force in 2010.
After leaving the Air Force, she went to work for a private contractor that did work for the NSA.
Counterintelligence expert Mike O'Neill explained to Inside Edition how easy she was to catch.
"This individual left a trail that led right to her," he said. "It was almost like she had a sign that said, 'Come arrest me.'"
Reality Winner lives in Augusta, Ga., and also kept a Twitter handle under another name — Sara Winner — that she used to slam President Trump, calling him an “orange fascist” and “tangerine in chief.”
The president warned in February that those responsible for leaks would be prosecuted.
Her attorney says she is "not a traitor."
