Thieves broke into her Beverly Hills home as the former Disney star was taking some time off in Canada.
Duff, who now stars in the TV Land series Younger, has been posting pictures and videos from her vacation that include her doing a handstand dive into a lake and her son Luca tubing.
All the while, her California home remained empty, and thanks to her social media, robbers knew it.
Security expert Steve Kardian told Inside Edition that the best way to avoid being targeted by thieves is to refrain from posting on social media, at least until you return.
"Wait until you are home from vacation," he said.

Duff is still on vacation, but her rep released a statement on her behalf.
"This is a scary and upsetting situation for anyone to go through, but Hilary is thankful that her family, her staff, her home and her pets are all safe," the rep said. "That said, she has a significant security team in place that will work with the authorities on this incident and handle security measures moving forward."
