Terror suspect Younes Abouyaaqoub was considered armed and dangerous, Spanish police said.
Spanish police have shot and killed the suspected van driver in last week's Barcelona terror attack, authorities said.
Catalan police said Monday that they opened fire on Younes Abouyaaqoub during an operation in Subirats, a suburb west of the city.

The 22-year-old Moroccan national appeared to be wearing a suicide belt and was alleged to be the driver of the van that plowed into people walking along Las Ramblas, killing 13 and injuring more than 120 others.
Officers later said the belt carried fake explosives.
Abouyaaqoub, according to police, ran from the carnage of Thursday’s attack and hijacked a car. He stabbed the vehicle’s driver, Pau Perez, to death and barreled through a checkpoint, authorities said.
Perez’s body was found in the car after Abouyaaqoub managed again to elude officers, police said.
Perez was the 15th fatality, following a woman who died early Friday from her injuries.
Abouyaaqoub is believed to be the final member of 12-man cell suspected of orchestrating the killings.
His mother pleaded with her son to surrender. “He must go to the police,” Hannou Ghanimi told reporters Sunday.
Police used a robot Monday to remove the suspected explosives belt.
