Bode Miller and His Wife Open Up About Daughter's Drowning: 'It Happens in the Blink of an Eye'

The couple spoke about Emmy's death in their first TV interview since the tragedy.

Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan Beck, fought back tears as they spoke about the drowning death of their 19-month-old daughter, Emmy, in their first TV interview since the tragedy.

“A child under 30 pounds can drown in 30 seconds, and I just keep counting to 30 in my head — that was all I needed,” Beck told the “Today” show.

Emmy fell into the pool while she and her mom were visiting a neighbor in California on June 10.

“It's one of these things where as a parent now when you go to someone else's house, survey the home to see if it's a safe place for your child to be,” Beck said.

Her husband added, "I can attest from firsthand experience now, that it's unbelievable quick, and it's unbelievable sneaky, you think it'd be like some weird circumstance, or some strange thing. And it's not, it just happens in the blink of an eye."

"Today" host Savannah Guthrie was clearly moved as she reflected on the interview on Friday's show.

“They are just in grief. They're devastated. They're absolutely devastated,” she told her co-hosts. "They’re speaking out at the depths of their grief and they’re doing it because they want to get the word out to other parents."

The full interview airs Monday on the “Today” show.
