A 1-year-old pit bull has gone from rags to riches after she was rescued from a Staten Island crack house.
“My fiancé got a call from somebody that there was this pit bull living in a crack house," Mahnken told InsideEdition.com. "They said the dog was left alone in the house. There was no food no water. There was feces everywhere. It was a disaster."
Mahnken said the pup, Ashley, wasn’t in good condition when they found her. She was extremely malnourished and had cigarette burns on her head.
“Her ribs were showing," Mahnken said. "She was still super happy though."
The couple called over to some friends at a Lower East Side FDNY station nicknamed "Fort Pitt," to ask them if Ash could stay with them for a few days until they found her a place to stay.
“As soon as we walked her in there everyone loved her. She was jumping on everyone and licking everybody,” Mahnken said.
It didn’t take the firefighters long to make the decision to adopt the pup.
“Within a couple days they said they said they were going to adopt her,” Mahnken said. “She’s a very lucky dog. She goes on lunch with them. She’s on the roof with them. She gained a lot of weight and she’s still very happy.”
The pit bull even has her own Instagram account to showcase her adventures.
The couple goes to visit Ash whenever they are in the city and are overjoyed she’s found a new home.
“I am just thankful they were able to take her because God knows where she’d be,” Mahnken said.
