In rural Hong Kong, thousands gathered for a family meal.

Lunar New Year celebrations are underway as people around the world celebrated the ringing in of the Year of the Pig.

In China, hundreds of millions tuned in to watch CCTV’s New Year’s Gala – a media event rivaling any Super Bowl halftime show.

Attendees and people who watched from their televisions alike were treated to stunning choreography, acrobatics, comedic skits, drama and even a water ballet.

Performances for the show were spread out between Beijing, Shenzhen in the south, Changchun in the northeast and Jinggangshan in the east.

As the clock struck midnight marking the New Year, fireworks went off and performers and audience members erupted in cheer.

The White Cloud Temple in Beijing saw large crowds of people, who burned incense and prayed for good fortune in the New Year.

In rural Hong Kong, thousands gathered around round tables to eat poon choi, a traditional dish comprised of layers of seafood, chicken and pork usually served in large celebrations like weddings.
