5 Manatees Rescued From Canal After Hurricane Idalia
September 12, 2023
A group of manatees moved into the Whiskey Creek canal near Fort Myers. A storm surge from Hurricane Idalia raised the water levels in the canal, making the manatees think this area was safe for them to live. But then the water levels began to recede and the manatees were trapped by a ledge. It took a team that included a zoo, a university, an aquarium, veterinarians, and even the sheriff’s department to successfully move the five manatees.
