Baby Giraffe Born in England Named After World War I Poet

A newborn giraffe has a big name to live up to! The Zoological Society of London has released footage of a baby giraffe, born on November 11th. Because the giraffe’s birthday fell on Remembrance Day, a holiday that honors those who lost their lives in WWI and other conflicts since, zoo staff chose to name him Wilfred. Wilfred Owen was an English soldier and poet, whose writings gave others a glimpse into what he once called “the pity of war."
