Beware the Blob: Zoo Showcases Self-Healing, Problem-Solving Slime Mold

October 17, 2019

This isn't a horror film, it's a real-life science exhibit at a Paris zoo featuring a "blob" that can move, eat, learn and heal itself in two minutes if it's cut in half. The "blob," named after the 1958 and 1988 movies by the same name, is actually the "blob" Physarum polycephalum, part of the Myxomycetes family, which is a type of slime mold. This type of organism is considered one of the mysteries of the natural world, since it is neither an animal nor a fungus but can behave like both.
