Sam Koets, 16, was diagnosed with severe autism and couldn’t talk or take care of himself. Last year, investigators say his dad, professor Timothy Koets, left his Grand Rapids, Michigan, home to teach a class while Sam was outside playing. His wife and 18-year-old sister were home at the time, but their day later turned horrific. “My daughter woke me up and said, ‘Sam’s in the pool!’ They insist his death was an accident. Timothy Koets was charged with involuntary manslaughter and pleaded not guilty.
