December 10, 2020

A full-scale prototype of a SpaceX test rocket exploded when it tried to land. Starship Serial Number 8 took off nicely from its launch pad in Texas. Then it descended, as planned, to attempt a tail-first landing. The 160-foot-long rocket’s steering system righted itself from horizontal to vertical. But it came in too fast, and when it hit the ground, it exploded. Despite that big bang, the test was considered a success. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted “Mars, here we come.”
