150,000 People Displaced Due to Flooding
May 7, 2024
Hundreds of people are missing, injured or dead due to the flooding that has saturated southern Brazil. In 10 days, the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul was hit with the same amount of rain the area usually sees in three months. The Guaiba River and its tributaries overflowed muddy water onto city streets. Authorities say more than 275 people have been injured and over 130 are missing. The death toll is at least 85 people, though the state’s Civil Defense Unit says that number will rise.
