Forensic Teams Search for Graves of 'Disappeared' in Chile

The Chilean Forensic Medical Service is searching for the bodies of over a thousand people who were 'disappeared' during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet came to power through a military coup on September 11, 1973. Thousands of political opponents were rounded up by the Pinochet regime. Some were killed in the days following the takeover. Many were imprisoned, tortured, or forced into exile. Others were “disappeared.” Their whereabouts remain a mystery.
