Known as “The Doctor Broad,” Dr. Barbara Roberts would catch heat for actually keeping a reputed New England mob boss alive in Rhode Island during the 1980s. While caring for the head of The Patriarca Crime Family, she would fall in love with the No. 3 guy in the mafia. Rhode Island’s first female cardiologist is telling her story in her new book, “The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story.”’s Stephanie Officer sat down with Roberts and finds out how she found the strength to conquer it all.
