The Berlin Wall falling in 1989 helped form a new Europe and brought an end to the decades long Cold War between the West and the Soviets. It also marked the ushering in of a new era. In South Africa, Nelson Mandela was working to unify his country. Years later, the events of 9/11 terror attacks and 7/7 bombings, as well as the invasion of Iraq, saw the world stand still and shaped the 21st century.
