Bruce’s Beach Returned to Family Who Government Took It From

July 1, 2022

The LA County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved returning beachfront property to the Bruce family. Bruce’s Beach, now known as Manhattan Beach, was purchased by Charles and Willa Bruce in 1912 as a resort for Black families who were excluded from other beach areas. A legal battle to return the land to the Bruce family has dragged on for years. Bruce’s Beach now enters escrow before officially transferring to the family. The Bruce heirs will receive $413,000 a year in rent from LA County.
