Officer Gunther Hashida, Who Responded to Capitol Assault, Dies by Suicide

Gunther Hashida, who defended the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection, has died by suicide. An 18-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police force, he was “assigned to the Emergency Response Team within the Special Operations Division,” according to authorities. U.S. Capitol Police officer Howard Liebengood and Metropolitan Police officer Jeffrey Smith both died in January. Officer Kyle DeFreytag, another member of the Metropolitan Police force, died by suicide on July 10.
