Old Suitcases Still Visible In Remains Of Ferry Disaster
January 22, 2026
The M.V. Salem Express ferry was traveling from Saudi Arabia to Egypt in 1991, when it sank to the bottom of the Red Sea. While some 180 passengers survived, 470 people did not. The bodies of those who perished have been removed, and now the remains of the Salem Express serve as a popular – if controversial – site for divers. Thirty-five years after the disaster, several features of the boat are still recognizable, and serve as a draw for underwater photographers.
