Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton is opening up about her harrowing medical crisis for the first time. In 1984, Retton became an idol when she became the first American woman to take home gold in gymnastics. Last October, she found herself fighting for her life when she was diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia. With her eldest daughter by her side, Retton tells ‘TODAY’s Hoda Kotb that her lungs were not visible on an x-ray.
