January 10, 2021
Winter in Russia is a great time to go for a swim, if you’re looking for ancient bones. Scientists and divers have been taking icy dips in the Tobol River, near the city of Kurgan, ever since a fossil and bone-rich stretch of the waterway was discovered in 2004. The bone deposit has yielded plenty of fascinating finds to the intrepid divers. They’ve turned up the remains of a woolly rhinoceros, bulls, lions, ancient fish and even prehistoric human tools.
