Sexual And Physical Abuse Widespread at Residential Schools, Survivors Say After Pope’s Apology

After Pope Francis’ week-long tour in Canada to apologize for the atrocities that occurred at the Catholic-backed residential school system Indigenous children were forced to attend, many survivors are once again speaking out about the traumas they faced. “They treated us like animals,” said survivor Evelyn Korkmaz. She said she witnessed her classmates being taken in the night to be abused. For her and many like her, the Pope’s apology comes too little too late. “You didn’t take ownership for what you [or] the church has done,” she said. Inside Edition Digital’s Johanna Li has more.
