Shoplifting of Food Spikes as 54 Million Americans Struggle With Hunger Each Day

The coronavirus has taken a massive toll on the economy as well as public health, and ridiculously long lines at food banks have become a common sight across the country. Fifty-four million Americans are going hungry every day, up 45% from last year. With that rise in hunger has come an increase in shoplifting, as many resort to taking what they need to eat but cannot afford to purchase. Fernando Mateo, a bodega union leader, says that many of the stores being stolen from are also owned by poor people.
