Tennessee Cemetery Has Departed Soldiers From Each War Since the Spanish American

Tucked away next to an Enterprise Rent-A-Car is a cemetery that served the Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Black community since 1887. The Benevolent Cemetery is an 8-acre plot of land with 320 marked graves, including military heroes who served with the Buffalo Soldiers. The African American Heritage Society of Rutherford County and graduate students at Middle Tennessee State University’s Center for Historic Preservation are working to put this cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places.
