Woman Hits Bicycling Sheriff With Her Car, Claims She Thought She Hit a Mailbox

A truck driver’s dashcam captured the moment when a bicyclist was struck by a car from behind. The trucker pulls over to give aid and it turns out that the cyclist is the local sheriff in Volusia County, Florida. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he suffered a fractured fibula and a nasty bruise on his back. Hours later, using traffic surveillance cameras, police tracked down the alleged hit-and-run suspect. The 20-year-old woman said she thought she hit a mailbox — while she was shopping on her phone.
