Cemetery Looted for Bronze Nameplates and Statues
January 15, 2024
A historic southern California cemetery was looted for its metal. Aisha Woods, a volunteer caretaker at Lincoln, told KCBS thieves have targeted the sacred space because of the bronze name plates and statues. Bronze can hold value when sold for scrap metal and melted down. But these pieces of bronze also hold sentimental and historical value. The face of a memorial donated by boxer Joe Lewis in 1944 was pried off. It was there for 79 years in honor of Black soldiers in World War II.
