Zoo Keepers Name Endangered Baby Rhino ‘Kyiv’ to Honor Ukraine

A critically endangered eastern black rhino was born in a Czech zoo on March 4, a week after Russia invaded Ukraine. According to zoologist, Jiri Hruby, “There are around 6- to 7,000 black rhinoceros in the wild but there are only 800 pieces of this sub species that live in East Africa.” This 110-pound baby boy is a sign of hope and strength in this challenged breed. Zoo keepers named him in honor of a place that greatly needs hope and strength in these challenging times: Kyiv.
