A Nevada man was arrested for allegedly killing a woman at random as she was on the phone with an emergency dispatcher because the man was roaming the streets with a sledgehammer, authorities said.
The unidentified woman called 911 while she was washing clothes at a laundromat near Washington Avenue and Rancho Drive in Las Vegas when she noticed a man carrying a mallet outside the business about 5 a.m. Thursday, KVVU-TV reported.
It was during that call that the woman began screaming before the line suddenly cut off.
Police arrived at the scene minutes later to find the woman lying dead outside the laundromat’s front doors. She had been bludgeoned.
They later found Clinton E. Taylor, 36, while walking along a street less than a mile from the laundromat, police told KVVU-TV.
Taylor was allegedly covered in blood and carrying a sledgehammer, investigators said.
Taylor faces one count of open murder. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
It appeared he did not know the victim and the “murder was a random act of violence,” according to police. The victim’s identity is pending proper family notification.
