Teenager Pleads Guilty to Murdering Elementary School Teacher in 'Unbelievable, Brutal Crime'
Sixth grade teacher Nicole Mathewson was beaten to death and sodomized in late-night home invasion, prosecutors said.
A Pennsylvania teenager pleaded guilty Monday to murdering a sixth grade teacher in what prosecutors called a brutal and horrific home burglary.
Marcus Rutter, 17, who was charged as an adult, admitted in court to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, burglary, robbery receiving stolen property and fraud.
Rutter was 16 when he and an adult accomplice beat to death teacher Nicole Mathewson, 32, while burglarizing her home in the middle of the night on Dec. 15, 2014.
Co-defendant Thomas Moore, 26, pleaded guilty in February and was sentenced to life in prison, plus 20 years, PennLive.com reported.
The two picked Mathewson’s home at random, authorities said.
After killing her, the two took her debit card and her car, prosecutors said.
Police said the attackers also sodomized Mathewson, but those counts were dropped as part of plea agreements in both cases.
"I don't think there's any question that this is one of the worst crimes we have ever seen," Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman said after the suspects were arrested.
"You're talking about violation of the sanctity of someone's home, the terror of being awaken in the middle of the night, strangers in there using force on you to cause your death and on top of that, prior to your death to have to suffer the indignities of what she suffered," he said.
"I really can't think of the words to describe how bad this is."
