Devastating 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Kills Thousands in Afghanistan

A series of devastating earthquakes struck western Afghanistan over the weekend. The US Geological Survey said the first quake, on Saturday, was 6.3 magnitude. It was followed by several powerful aftershocks. The quakes destroyed tens of villages and towns near the city of Herat. Days later, rescuers continue to sift through the rubble, in search of the living – and the dead. The death toll numbers in the thousands.
