The Game ‘Beardless Man and the Bride’ Is Living Folklore in Eastern Turkey
A fun and unusual winter tradition is still being practiced in eastern Turkey. The game
“Beardless Man and the Bride” is a form of dress up, in which a volunteer dons a costume
made of grass and wool. This “beardless man” and another character, his “bride,” go door to
door to collect food. That food is then distributed to people in need. The custom is a piece of
living folklore that also serves as a form of mutual aid for the community.
