Truck Plows Through Gym Moments After Class Lets Out Early

Security footage captured the heart-stopping moment the Mitsubishi careened through Real Fitness in Playa Del Rey at about 9 a.m. Saturday.

A southern California gym full of people narrowly avoided catastrophe when they left their class shortly before a pickup truck plowed into the building and through the workout space, authorities said.

Security footage captured the heart-stopping moment the Mitsubishi careened through Real Fitness in Playa Del Rey at about 9 a.m. Saturday.

“No warning at all,” said Wesley Bixler, who can be seen at the top of the screen as the truck comes crashing through the gym.

“I was just minding my own business and I just hear this big bang and it sounded like an explosion went off,” Bixler told KCBS-TV. “And I turned and there's the truck just right there, through the wall.”

Police told the television station the driver was on West Manchester Avenue and approaching Pershing Drive when he lost control of his vehicle.

Good Samaritans rushed through the hole in the wall to check on any potential occupants of the gym as well as the driver.

“It looked like he was okay,” witness Sergio Bautista said. “From the looks of it, he looked like he was banged up with a few scratches and bruises but nothing too crazy.”

The gym suffered extensive damage, but the owners of the establishment are thankful that they, and their members, are all alive.

Normally we'd have around 15, 16 people at that time,” a trainer said. “And because it’s the holidays, we had a couple only show up and we ended class early."
