YouTube Star Furry Potato Shot in the Leg Outside Synagogue
Police responded to reports of a disturbance outside of a Los Angeles synagogue and Jewish high school on Thursday and found the YouTuber, whose real name is Zhoie Perez, with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.
Transgender YouTube personality Furry Potato was reportedly shot during an argument with a security guard while she was livestreaming, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Police responded to reports of a disturbance outside of a Los Angeles synagogue and Jewish high school on Thursday and found the YouTuber, whose real name is Zhoie Perez, with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.
Perez, 45, was treated for a non-life-threatening wound. She described it as a “deep graze,” according to the Times.
The YouTube star is known for “testing” her First Amendment rights in public places.
“I was just filming the exterior of the synagogue here, and getting a lot of like, the architecture, and all that, and the guard came out and just started freaking out, started putting his hand on his gun,” Perez told the paper.
A gunshot can be heard on the livestream as Perez stands near the synagogue’s front gate.
Police said Perez, who has more than 17,000 YouTube subscribers, was standing on the public sidewalk when the shooting took place.
The guard, Edduin Zelayagrunfeld, was arrested after the incident on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He has not yet entered a plea.
The school principal, Yehudis Farkash, said the ordeal caused anxiety for staff and students.
“An individual was filming our girls at the school, in the building, the perimeter of the building including all the windows and exits. This caused a great deal of anxiety to both our staff and our students,” Farkash told reporters. “During the incident we did try to keep the girls calm and the building was placed on lockdown.”
