Blind Runner Is First to Finish New York City Half Marathon With Guide Dogs

March 18, 2019

Thomas Panek crossed the finish line at the New York City Half Marathon, making him the first blind man in history to complete the race with guide dogs. Panek's three dogs took turns running by his side, navigating him safely through the 13.1-mile race course. Panek ran cross-country in high school, but had to stop when he lost his eyesight after suffering from retinitis pigmentosa. He started Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which pairs visually impaired people up with dogs so they can run again.
