Cannibal Lancetfish Normally Found 6000 Feet Below Ocean Washes Up On California Shore

This scary looking sea creature has got San Diego beachgoers wishing he’d stayed in the deep. A 4-foot lancetfish washed up on shore in LaJolla, California this week. Lancetfish are typically found 6000-feet below the ocean’s surface, snacking on each other. These guys are cannibals! Oceanographer Ethan Portner explains lancetfish are, “a medium sized open ocean predator.” And while lancetfish sightings are rare, you never know what you might find coming out of the ocean.
