Firefighter Plunges Into Icy Montana River to Save Dog

February 8, 2019

Firefighter David Mangold braved the icy waters of Montana's Whitefish River to save Maxx, a dog who had fallen through the ice. Using a specially designed suit to keep him warm, Mangold swam out to Maxx, freeing him from the ice and helping him get safely back to shore. Maxx was warmed up and is now safe and sound, but Mangold said he hopes other pet owners will remember to keep themselves and their pets safe in cold weather. "When animals go through the ice, please don't go out and try to get them," Mangold said. "Leave it to the professionals."
