Hippos Born in California and France While Pablo Escobar’s Hippo Colony Grows
June 23, 2020
It must be baby hippopotamus season, because two new little hippos recently made their debuts. A pygmy hippo calf named Akobi was born at the San Diego Zoo in April. In France, a baby hippo named Gloria made her first appearance. Born in early June, Gloria is what’s known as a common or river hippopotamus. That branch of the hippo family is more populous than the pygmy hippos. Though it’s still a vulnerable species, there are at least 125,000 common hippos estimated to be living in the wild.
