Powerful 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Taiwan

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan's eastern region, making it the island's strongest quake so far this year. The earthquake sent office workers, students and commuters fleeing from buildings, but initial reports showed only 17 people injured and light damage. The earthquake occurred just after 1 p.m. Thursday. Taiwan is located along seismic faults in what is known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and experiences frequent earthquakes.
