Winchester Gun Heiress Built Mansion to Keep Ghosts Away
The terrifying new movie, 'Winchester,' is based on the true story of a firearms heiress with a paranoid streak. In 1881, Sarah Winchester moved to California to build a mansion full of rooms with no apparent purpose, and doors and staircases that seemingly went nowhere. Winchester reportedly believed she and her family were haunted by the ghosts of those killed by Winchester guns. The house is perfect fodder for the Hollywood scare treatment, and the ideal place for a ghost.
